Ariana Grande Is The New Teen Queen

Posted on 06:06 by rajveer

Victoria Justice and Jasmine V are probably doing shots off the hood of a car somewhere in the dark heart of Los Angeles right now, sobbing on each others' shoulders and screaming "fuck my life!" to random passersby. On the other side of town, Selena Gomez is begging Justin to make a sextape to promote her new album. A couple of blocks away Demi Lovato is parked outside McDonald's meticulously sterilizing her razor with a cigarette lighter, while Bridgit Mendler sits inside, building up the courage to ask for a job application. What has thrown the current crop of teen queens into such a tailspin? Two words. Ariana Grande.

My only exposure to the Nickelodeon star until now has been her contribution to the Victorious soundtrack. I knew she could sing but I wasn't expecting her to drop anything as good as "The Way" and definitely didn't expect it to shoot to number one on US iTunes within hours of release. Ariana has broken through faster and more comprehensively than any of the girls mentioned above and they must be concerned. There's only room for one Queen and this new bitch means business.

It only takes one listen to understand the appeal of "The Way". It's a blatant Mariah Carey rip off that harks back to the late '90s when production took a back seat to vocal ability. I had no idea Ariana had pipes like this. She has real talent and chooses the perfect vehicle to show it off. Produced by Harmony Samuels, an English producer who has crafted hits for Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Nas, the track sounds like it was lifted straight from Mimi's Butterfly album. It's a subtle mid-tempo pop song with the slightest sheen of urban credibility thanks to Mac Miller, who tones his usual act down with an age appropriate rap.

While I still prefer Demi's epic "Heart Attack" and live for Selena's reed thin vocals, there's no denying that Ariana Grande has arrived in true diva style. "The Way" is a great single that avoids most of the overproduced teen pop cliches. She even gets the cute and colourful video (below) right, having the world's tamest party with Mac Miller. Why is she twirling around in a room full of balloons like a 12-year-old? Where's the keg? These are questions for another day but it's kind of nice that she's not twerkin' like a stripper.

Jasmine V Is The New Madonna

Posted on 04:52 by rajveer

I can't live this lie any longer. After years of denial, it's time to come out of the closet and admit that I am... a Jasminator. Sweet relief! You might be wondering what the fuck is going on right now, so let me give you the Cliff Notes version.

Teen goddess Jasmine Villegas - better known to hundreds of fans worldwide as Jasmine V - got her big break playing Justin Bieber's love interest in the "Baby" video and has been plugging away at her own pop career ever since. I was introduced to her musical brilliance in LA when I had to write about her stunning buzz singles for Idolator. I liked most of them but she never quite reached the same level of success as contemporaries like Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Victoria Justice or Bridgit Mendler.

That could change because the teenager's new single is an absolute triumph. I'm basically playing "Paint A Smile" on a loop with Nicole's "Boomerang" and Ke$ha's "C'Mon". Yes, it's really that amazing. Jasmine's upbeat break-up anthem is cute as a button. The move towards electronica is inspired (her last single was an mid-tempo R&B anthem about domestic abuse - I'm not kidding) and the lyrics are relentlessly uplifting. I particularly like this nugget of wisdom: "When the world lets me down I'll paint a smile on!"

The video is fairly standard for an upcoming diva. The 19-year-old leaves her boyfriend and goes on a joyride only to stop at a service station manned by a male model. Because pumping gas is the industry most good-looking people gravitate towards. From that point on, there's some wholesome bar-dancing and a bit of emoting in a field. The clip isn't going to win any awards but it does the trick.

Prepare to be blown away by "Paint A Smile" (below). I'll save you a seat at the next Jasminator convention!

Megan and Liz, Really Not Bad For Me. At All.

Posted on 22:41 by rajveer

I'm so obsessed with US teen pop at the moment. There's definitely a revival going on. It started with Selena and Demi releasing two of last year's best albums and has gained momentum with newcomers like the amazing Bridgit Mendler. Another couple of names to watch out for are 19-year-old twin sisters Megan and Liz. The new millennium's Mel and Kim have steadily built a following via YouTube - they have 750,000+ subscribers - and now have their sights set on chart glory with new single "Bad For Me".

Co-written and produced by Martin Johnson from Boys Like Girls, the sisters' breakthrough anthem is an irresistible shot of pure pop. The song taps into the ever-popular synth-pop/lite-rock sound first perfected by Hilary Duff almost a decade ago. There's a little bit of angst in the mix but it's very well hidden by the crisp beats, catchy hooks and perky vocals. "Bad For Me" is a cute song and deserves to do well. Megan and Liz are rising on US iTunes and could have something big on their hands if radio plays along. The video (below) is pretty basic but it does the trick.

Ready Or Not, Bridgit Mendler Is America's New Teen Pop Queen

Posted on 06:07 by rajveer

Sorry for the lack of updates but it's been a crazy week. I've been filling in for someone on breakfast radio, writing articles for various websites, finding my feet in a new job and doing without the internet due to the death of my much-loved laptop. RIP La Toya.

Well, I'm back online and have a mountain of music to catch up on. I'll get around to writing about my faves later in the week but I thought I'd get the ball rolling with a song by a girl called Bridgit Mendler that has been burning up my iPod. "Ready Or Not" is American teen pop at its best. Think Selena Gomez meets Can't Be Tamed-era Miley Cyrus with a splash of vintage Vanessa Hudgens thrown in for good measure. Yes, it's really that amazing.

So who is this new pop powerhouse? The 19-year-old is yet another product of the Disney channel. She scored her big break last year when she starred in Lemonade Mouth, which is kind of like High School Musical for slightly cooler kids. The soundtrack reached the top 5 in America. A solo album was an inevitability and it's going to be pretty epic if "Ready Or Not" (below) is any indication. Written and produced by the guys behind such flawless anthems as Heidi Montag's "Body Language" and Demi Lovato's "Fix A Heart", the breezy jam hits all the right notes with its cheesy lyrics and addictive chorus.

Time will tell if Bridgit is the next Selena Gomez or is fated to follow Emily Osment's path to oblivion but this is a very promising beginning.

Demi Lovato & The Year's Best Power Ballad

Posted on 04:51 by rajveer
I know it's pointless to compare emerging stars with existing icons but if Selena Gomez has her eye on Madonna's dance-pop throne, then Demi Lovato is Generation Y's answer to Mariah. I guess that makes Victoria Justice the new Pat Benatar. But I digress. My point is that Demetria can actually sing. The 19-year-old has a fearsome set of pipes and she gives them one hell of a workout on her latest single "Give Your Heart A Break". To be honest, I initially thought the Billy Steinberg/Josh Alexander co-production sounded a bit dated and, as such, wasn't the best choice to follow "Skyscraper" but I was wrong.

This glorious mid-tempo ballad has wormed its way into my heart and mind to an unholy extent. They just don't make power-grabbing anthems like this anymore! I love Demi's over-the-top vocal and the cutting-edge (for 2006) production pushes all my buttons. The video is a bit uneventful - our heroine hangs out with a dude who eventually shows her how much he loves her by plastering a wall in photographs - but the budding diva won me over with her first Celine Dion hand-clutch. "Give Your Heart A Break" is shooting up US iTunes and should, hopefully, become another huge hit for the future superstar.
